～未来のため、家族のために頑張る留学生の姿～
Ⅰ．調査目的
本調査（アンケート）は、在日アフリカ留学生がコロナ禍で抱えている問題を調査し、留学生への大学の支援の在り方について考察することを目的としている。
Ⅱ．調査概要
1. 調査対象 JAAN加盟大学に在籍中の在日アフリカ留学生
2. 実施期間 2022年4月21日～５月15日
3. 調査方法 インターネット上のアンケートフォームに入力し、データを回収
4. 回答件数 122件（13大学）
Ⅲ．調査結果
日本で生活する上で特に悩みがない留学生は45%、悩みがある留学生は43%だった。悩みの要因は、日本の言語/文化、社会に関するものが57%、経済的なものが22%で全体の8割を占めた。また20%の留学生はその悩みが解決していないとし、13%の留学生は困っている時に相談できる身近な人がいないと答えた。更に、46%の留学生はパートナーや子供と離れて暮らし、56%の留学生は新型コロナウィルスに伴う規制や経済的な理由から渡航や外出が難しく、家族や友達と対面できていないと答えた。
Ⅳ．考察
留学生が日本で生活する上での一番の悩みは言葉の壁であることが分かった。また日本語が話せても日本人特有の「indirect communication」を理解することに苦労しているようだ。一方、経済面では、日本の物価が高い事に加え、コロナ禍での収入減が大きく影響し、日本での生活費捻出及び現地の家族を養うことが難しい状況になっていた。心の支えである家族との対面に関しては、物価の高い日本に家族を呼び寄せられず、渡航規制のために会いにも行けず、更に時差や高価な通信費用が現地の家族との会話の障害になっていることが明らかになった。
全ての留学生が悩みを抱えている訳ではないものの、異国の地で孤独を感じながらも自分の研究や学業のため、家族のために頑張っている留学生の姿が映し出された。受入大学として、政府/大学の経済支援の案内を強化するほか、留学生に交友関係を築けるようなきっかけ（企画やコミュニケーションの場）を提供し続けることが大事なのではないだろうか。同じ気持ちや困難を共感できる留学生仲間や日本人との絆が、少しでも心の支えになってくれたらと願う。

・Language barrier is a challenge but it is not a big problem, one can manage by asking university staff or fellow students.
・Living in Japan is comfortable but two issues are rare to find: people taking in English and Halal food availability.

・During the outbreak of COVID-19, I had an anxiety disorder and mental depression. I was in the process of inviting my wife, but due to travel restrictions, she was prevented from traveling to Japan. As a family person, with two kids and extended family to support, I became extremely worried since my income was reduced drastically. I lost all my part-time jobs and only rely on the scholarship stipend, which is not sufficient to take care of my family.

・Just one challenge that stuck out. The cost of paying the quarantine fee is not covered by my MEXT scholarship. Although the university paid partly, it was a big burden for me to cover the cost of the quarantine. I felt it was not fair treatment especially that I am just a student.

・It was impossible to invite families in the the time I need. Or It was not possible to go to home in break time.
・Loneliness: It’s not easy to cope with the loneliness when you’re far from your family as this leads to depression. We have to wait until a year to hope your partner or kids can join you, which is even more difficult in a covid-19 crisis situation.
・4 years I didn’t see my family, friends in Algeria unfortunately very close family members passed away I was not there.
経済的理由

・I would have love to travel during breaks but its so difficult to travel especially the quarantine cost.
